Dark Souls 3 FPS Boost

Xbox Series X|S owners can now enjoy FromSoftware's Dark Souls III at double the original frame rate as Microsoft today expanded its FPS Boost efforts to cover the massively popular RPG from 2016.

Thanks to the implementation, the backward compatible version of Dark Souls III is now running at 60FPS on Microsoft's latest consoles, doubling the Xbox One generation's 30FPS performance target that has been there since the beginning. This should certainly make dodging swipes from unforgiving bosses a much smoother experience. It doesn't appear as though the original 900p resolution has been improved upon.

Director of Program Management at Xbox Jason Ronald also commented on the feature while thanking FromSoftware and Bandai Namco for their partnership. Ronald says FPS Boost "required a brand new technique, unique to Dark Souls 3," to enable the performance benefits, though this was not elaborated on.

For those in the dark about FPS Boost, it is a range of performance enhancing techniques utilized by the Backward Compatibility team of Microsoft that can be applied on games without needing resources of the developer, which can lead to doubled, and sometimes quadruped, frame rates. So far, almost 100 backward compatible games have received the treatment for Xbox Series X|S.

Leaving behind the Kingdom of Lothric, Elden Ring, FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki's next project, is slated to land on January 21 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. The highly anticipated title will also feature writing by George R. R. Martin, the creator behind A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
