Query Diagnostics for Power BI Desktop reaches general availability

In recent news concerning Microsoft's data analytics department, the firm unveiled a performance enhancement for Power BI Multi Geo capacities, while a few days before that, the On-premises data gateway update for March was made available. Meanwhile, those who have been following the Power BI Desktop news in the past few months will recall that a new Query Diagnostics feature was introduced in last October's update for the platform.

Essentially, the capability allows users to determine the actions of the Mashup Engine – as part of Power Query – during authoring time. These actions included information regarding background events, emitted queries, and more. Today, Query Diagnostics has been made generally available, and Microsoft has gone over some of the key advantages of utilizing the capability, as well as hinted toward possible upcoming changes.

For starters, the initial release required admin rights, which was a hindrance for many users. This has now been changed to include a non-admin option which can be viewed in the image above. Two ways in which Query Diagnostics can be leveraged have also been mentioned – namely, Diagnose Step, and recording Diagnostics. And finally, the significance of the new Decomposition Tree feature with respect to Query Diagnostics has been highlighted. The former can be used with the latter to gain a comprehensive understanding of the time costs being undertaken for separate operations.

Moving on, Microsoft states that the capability will be seeing even more improvements in the future. These include further information regarding engine performance, firewall activity, and more.
