Microsoft has rolled out the firmware update for Surface Earbuds for the month of September 2020. The version is 126.96.36.199 which includes an option to enable or disable via the aptX codec.
You can install the update simply using the guidelines in the later part of this post.

On an iOS or Android device
Draw your earbuds from the charging case to connect.
Do either of the following –
Tap the notification showing that an update is available for Surface Earbuds.
Or, open the Surface Audio app, then choose Update now.
This button will automatically arrive when an update is available. This can consume approximately 15 minutes or so to download and install on Android and about an hour on an iOS device. Until the completion of the update, you will be unable to make calls or listen to music using your earbuds. Youâ€™ll receive a notification when the update is finished.
You can ensure if updates are available anytime. Tap on Settings next to Surface Earbud in the Surface Audio app.
